  1. I think what you’re seeing for “24-bit” color is really 16-bit color. 24-bit and 32-bit color actually look the same–8 bits per channel gives you 24 bits, and the other 8 bits are either padding or alpha channel.

    I found that I couldn’t seem to get xvfb to run at 24-bit color on screen 1 even when I tried to force it, but that it ran fine in 24-bit color on screen 0. So I’m guessing that there’s an X configuration issue, because 24-bit color should look much better than that.
